NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS AS SOLUTION OF ENERGY CRISIS AND GLOBAL WARMING
Tayang Internet: 04-12-2009 18:26
(Jakarta, BAPETEN) Nuclear Power Plant is the solution for energy crisis following the depletion of fossil fuel availability, as well as preventing global warming from CO2 gases released into the air. The statement appeared in the dialogue at The Interview withMetro TV, which was broadcasted live, on Monday (22/6) morning, with speakers BAPETEN Head As Natio Lasman, and Deputy of dynamics of society of the Ministry for Research and Technology, Karunia Firdausi.
”Nuclear Power plant is chosen because of its being efficient, the application of increasingly advanced technology and that it can create a more comfortable environment for the community”, Karunia said. Furthermore, Karunia said, “nuclear power plants, in addition to being environmentally friendly, it is also much better than other energy sources such as water or solar.

Still, the doubts exist in a number of community member concerning the plan of nuclear power plant in Indonesia, Chief BAPETEN confirmed. These concerns did not need to occur actually. “Because the monitoring system that is now implemented by BAPETEN always involves the IAEA, and it is done in accordance with the developments of the current technology”, said Chief of BAPETEN.

Head of BAPETEN added that the Chernobyl incident occurrence could not be separated from the abuse of utilization, in which nuclear power plant was used as an experimental reactor. This abuse later became problems and negatively affect public perception on going nuclear.

Existing nuclear power plant technology is now tested and has a layered design. So for factors of Safety, Security and Safeguards of a nuclear power plant, it already meets the established requirements. “It needs a good understanding of nuclear technology in the community. Therefore, the socialization of nuclear power plants will continue to be intensified by involving various stakeholders”, said Karunia. Another effort that was made is to publish books on nuclear technology at the school level and implement trainings for those who do not yet understand nuclear technology.

BATAN’s experience in operating research reactors is very good. Therefore, the public will not have to worry about the development plan and operation of nuclear power plants in Indonesia. Areas that will be used to build nuclear power plants are also selected in locations that do not have a history of earthquake. “Even nuclear power plants in Japan that had been hit by earthquake some times ago, have started operating again”, ended BAPETEN Head.
