BAPETEN Courtesy Call with the IAEA and the Opening of the IAEA Expert Mission Review of Regulations on NORM Residue and Uranium Mining

The Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN) leadership received a visit from the expert mission review team at the BAPETEN office for a courtesy call and the opening of the IAEA Expert Mission Review of Regulations on Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM) Residue and Uranium Mining on February 10-14, 2025. This meeting was held to review regulations on the management of NORM (Radioactive Associated Minerals) and uranium mining in Indonesia.

In this courtesy call, Acting Chairman of BAPETEN Sugeng Sumbarjo was accompanied by Deputy Chairman for Licensing and Inspection Zainal Arifin, Deputy Chairman for Nuclear Safety Assessment Haendra Subekti, Head of the Centre for Regulatory Assessment of Nuclear Installations and Materials Taruniyati Handayani, Director of Regulation of Nuclear Installations and Materials Nur Syamsi Syam, and Head of the Education and Training Division Ahmad Ciptadi Syuryavin. Sugeng opened the meeting with an introduction of BAPETEN officials and thanked the IAEA experts, Zhiwen Fan, Wahab Yusof, and Keith Baldry, for their presence.

The event continued with the opening of the IAEA Expert Mission Review of Regulations on NORM Residue and Uranium Mining, which will run until February 14, 2025. In his opening remarks, Haendra Subekti expressed his appreciation to the experts for their valuable insights and guidance to further strengthen BAPETEN's regulatory framework. "Continued international collaboration can facilitate the process towards a stronger regulatory framework. This mission is an important step in aligning our regulations with IAEA safety standards and learning from international best practices," Haendra concluded.

The first day of this series of activities continued with a presentation on an overview of Indonesia's current regulatory framework for the management of radioactive by-products and uranium mining (Government Regulation No. 52 of 2022) by Tino S. A. Nugroho and a summary and recommendations for follow-up to the 2024 IAEA National Workshop on NORM Management by Petit Wiringgalih. The discussion concluded with a discussion. [BHKK/GP]
