The Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN), through its Bureau of Legal Affairs, Cooperation, and Public Communication (BHKK), held a discussion and Q&A session with the media in Serang, Banten, on August 22, 2025. This session was held to provide further clarification regarding the discovery and safeguarding of material contaminated with radioactive Caesium 137 (Cs-137).

Following up on information regarding Cs-137 contamination in frozen shrimp products processed by PT BMS, an Indonesian company exporting to the United States, BAPETEN, with the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries and the Ministry of Environment, conducted a series of joint investigations and monitoring at the shrimp factory (PT BMS).

The event was presented by the Deputy Chairman for Licensing and Inspection, Zainal Arifin, along with the Head of BHKK, Ishak; the Director of Inspection of Radiation Facilities and Radioactive Materials (DIFRZR), Zulkarnain; and the Deputy Head of the Emergency Response Team, Agus Yudhi Pristianto.

Based on the results of the investigation, it was reported that exposure rate measurements at the frozen shrimp factory (PT BMS) indicated the presence of Cs-137 contamination. BAPETEN is currently investigating the source of the Cs-137 contamination. During the investigation, BAPETEN conducted radiation monitoring over a wider area and discovered significant radiation exposure at the scrap metal collection site in the area. The investigation revealed the presence of metal materials suspected of containing radioactive Cs-137. BAPETEN, along with the Indonesian National Police (POLRI), has temporarily secured the scrap metal collection site by installing a police line.

Furthermore, BAPETEN expanded the radiation monitoring coverage in the wider area within a 2 km radius and found two other locations that showed high radiation dose rates. BAPETEN and the POLRI have installed police lines as a temporary security measure before further handling and investigations are carried out. BAPETEN remains committed to ensuring and guaranteeing the safety of the community and the environment. "Next, BAPETEN and POLRI will conduct further investigations to locate the source of the contamination and the distribution of the Cs-137 material," explained Ishak in a discussion and question and answer session with the media crew.
