Inspection of Frozen Shrimp Containers Suspected of Being Contaminated with Radioactive Cesium-137

The Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN) conducted an inspection of containers containing frozen shrimp suspected of being contaminated with radioactive Caesium-137 (Cs-137) at the Koja Container Terminal on 8 October 2025. This activity was carried out following a report from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which previously identified frozen shrimp from Indonesia contaminated with radioactive Cs-137.

The activity began with coordination between BAPETEN and representatives from the Koja Container Terminal (TPK Koja), the Marine and Fisheries Product Quality Control and Supervision Agency (BPPMHKP), the Directorate General of Customs and Excise (DJBC), and the Indonesian Quarantine Agency regarding the inspection process. Subsequently, the entire team proceeded to the port to conduct the inspection on the container.

The first inspection was carried out on the truck designated to transport the container. The truck was directed to pass through the Radiation Portal Monitor (RPM) owned by DJBC at TPK Koja. After the truck was declared safe and did not trigger any warning alarms on the RPM, it proceeded to load the container, which was then required to pass through the RPM again for a subsequent check.

Thereafter, BAPETEN’s Mobile Expert Support Team (MEST) conducted a secondary inspection to verify the radiation dose rate of the container. During this inspection, the MEST team did not detect any significant increase in radiation exposure levels, which were found to be consistent with the background radiation levels at TPK Koja.

After no significant increase in radiation exposure rate was detected, BAPETEN’s Mobile Expert Support Team (MEST) conducted a contamination check on the outer walls of the container to ensure the absence of radioactive contamination. All inspections indicated that there was no radioactive contamination on the container that had arrived from the United States.

BAPETEN emphasized that all examinations were carried out to ensure the safety and security of workers, the public, and the environment from potential exposure to radioactive materials. BAPETEN also reaffirmed its commitment to consistently supervising nuclear energy utilization in Indonesia. [BHKK/Da/OR]
