Opening of the Interregional Training Course on Drafting Regulations for Countries Embarking in Nuclear Power Programme

The Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN) hosted the Interregional Training Course on Drafting Regulations for Countries Embarking on Nuclear Power Programme, organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on 9-20 December 2024 in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The first day of the training was attended by the Head of the Centre for Regulatory Assessment of Nuclear Installation and Materials (P2STPIBN), BAPETEN Judi Pramono, Head of the BAPETEN Education and Training Division (BDL) Ahmad Ciptadi Syuryavin, and experts from the IAEA, namely Shahid Rashid, Lena Krikorian, Jean-Rene Jubin, and Cynthia Pederson.

The activity was opened by a speech from Judi Pramono, who said, "Indonesia has committed to reducing the use of fossil fuels through the National Net Zero Emission (NZE) program. This program is expected to succeed in 2060. To implement this program, all renewable energy and new energy must contribute to reducing CO₂ emissions in Indonesia". Then continued with a speech from IAEA Expert Jean-Rene Jubin, who welcomed the training participants and provided regulations regarding the implementation of the Interregional Training Course on Drafting Regulations for Countries Embarking on Nuclear Power Programme.

This training was attended by 35 participants from Egypt, Estonia, Ghana, Indonesia, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Nigeria, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Turkey, and Uzbekistan. After the opening, the training was continued with an introduction of the participants and a presentation on "Purpose and Objectives and IAEA Safety Standards" by Jean-Rene Jubin, "Introduction to Planning Tool" by Cindy Pederson, and "Safety Infrastructure" by Shahid Rashid.

On the first day, the training was closed with a discussion and a quiz that was attended by all training participants. The training aims to enhance the knowledge and skills of participating IAEA staff members to develop and draft national and/or revise existing nuclear safety regulations in cooperation with other participants as well as with the IAEA and international experts.
