Accelerating the Licensing Process for the Use of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology Facilities in Yogyakarta

As part of the Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN) efforts to facilitate the licensing process for applicants seeking to utilize nuclear technology, the Directorate of Licensing for Radiation Facilities and Radioactive Materials (DPFRZR), in collaboration with the local provincial Health Office, held an event to expedite licensing services for diagnostic and interventional radiology facilities in Yogyakarta. The event took place at the Special Region of Yogyakarta Health Office on September 24-25, 2025, and was attended by participants from various parts of Yogyakarta, as well as from Magelang, Surakarta, Surabaya, Subang, Jambi, and other regions.
The event opened with a report from the Director of DPFRZR, Asep Saefulloh Hermawan, who explained that the initiative was carried out in several stages: an online technical guidance webinar on radiology facility licensing, an accelerated licensing evaluation process, and finally, the issuance of licenses. Representing the Special Region of Yogyakarta Health Office, the Head of the Health Services Division, Dr. Gregorius Anung Trihadi, M.P.H., expressed his gratitude for this proactive approach to the licensing process. It is worth noting that there are currently 80 hospitals equipped with X-ray machines and new services supporting the treatment of cancer, heart disease, stroke, and uro-nephrology (KJSU). A common issue is that equipment often arrives before the necessary licenses are secured; this event aims to ensure that healthcare facilities utilizing radiation meet all legal requirements.
Zainal Arifin, BAPETEN’s Deputy Chairman for Licensing and Inspection, also attended the event and emphasized that healthcare facilities must adhere to established procedures for X-ray utilization, given that radiation is invisible. The licensing process is essential to ensure the safety of all parties involved, including patients, the general public, families, and workers.
This session featured a discussion and Q&A moderated by Roy Chandra Primarsa, the manager of health facility licensing activities. Key topics included the requirement for a Radiation Protection Officer (RPO) per health facility, challenges regarding training for nuclear medicine facilities, document recommendations from professional organizations for diagnostic and interventional radiology facility licensing, and other licensing-related requirements and procedures.
In closing, on the second day, Roy Chandra stated that communication could continue after the event, as BAPETEN maintains a help desk ready to provide information regarding licensing. Furthermore, following this two-day event, DPFRZR is conducting an evaluation to improve service delivery and plans to compile a flyer outlining procedures and FAQs. (Ra/Bhkk/Translator: GP)
