The Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN) leadership received a courtesy call from the Embassy of Canada at the BAPETEN office on Friday, March 14, 2025, to discuss the progress of nuclear energy in Indonesia and domestic nuclear reactor regulations.

During this courtesy call, Acting Chairman of BAPETEN Sugeng Sumbarjo was accompanied by Deputy Chairman for Licensing and Inspection Zainal Arifin; Deputy Chairman for Nuclear Safety Assessment Haendra Subekti; Head of the Centre for Regulatory Assessment of Nuclear Installation and Materials (P2STPIBN) Taruniyati Handayani; Director of Regulation of Nuclear Installation and Materials (DP2IBN) Nur Syamsi Syam; Head of the Bureau of Legal Affairs, Cooperation, and Public Communication (BHKK) Ishak; Director of Licensing of Nuclear Installation and Materials (DPIBN) Wiryono; and Director of Inspection of Nuclear Installation and Materials (DIIBN) Lukman Hakim. To kick off the meeting, Sugeng opened with an introduction of BAPETEN officials and expressed his gratitude for the visit of the Canadian Embassy. The attendees included the Ambassador of Canada to Indonesia and Timor-Leste Jess Dutton; Director of Business Development (Asia Pacific), Atkins Realis Sara Supa-Amornkul; Senior Trade Commissioner Meena Bhullar; Counselor, Second Secretary, Trade Commissioner Francis Despatis; and Trade Commissioner - Infrastructure Dewi Sari.

The event continued with an opening remark by the Acting Chairman of BAPETEN, who stated, "Indonesia is committed to climate change through renewable energy, including nuclear power plants. Planning for nuclear power plant development in Indonesia requires a phased licensing process, including design, siting, pre-construction, construction, commissioning, operation, and decommissioning. Nuclear power plants are available in water-cooled and land-based reactors, and regulations are currently being developed to accommodate non-water reactors and floating-based reactors."

In her remarks, Dr. Sara said, "We will discuss specific plans and requirements for nuclear energy development, as well as evaluating the safety and security aspects of larger, proven reactor technologies compared to smaller, newer technologies such as SMRs. As Canadian representatives, we will provide more detailed information on the schedule, cost, and construction duration of potential nuclear reactor projects. The Canadian team will offer high-level training or information sessions on nuclear safety and the licensing framework to stakeholders in Indonesia."

Haendra Subekti also discussed the importance of safety and security in technology, highlighting the need for proven and tested technology and the potential for larger, safer reactors, rather than smaller reactors with new technology. BAPETEN strives to find a compromise between safety and security as its top priority.

BAPETEN also emphasized the importance of safety and security in technology, the need for proven and tested technology, and the potential for larger, safer reactors. This activity is expected to foster a good cooperative relationship between BAPETEN, representing Indonesia, and the Embassy of Canada. The conversation concluded with a brief gratitude and greetings. (BHKK/CD/Nurul/Translator: GP)
