BAPETEN Investigates Container Showing Signs of Radioactivity at Tanjung Priok Port

On September 23, 2025, the Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN) received two reports from Tanjung Priok Customs regarding imported containers, one belonging to PT Jakarta Central Asia Steel and the other to PT Luckione, that triggered alarms when passing through Radiation Portal Monitors (RPM). In response, BAPETEN’s Mobile Expert Support Team (MEST) conducted investigations into both cases.
The first container held imported automotive components. The investigation took place at the Graha Segara Temporary Storage Facility (TPS); results revealed the presence of radionuclides classified as Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM), specifically Thorium-232 and Radium-226. Consequently, BAPETEN recommended that the container be released for distribution.
The MEST team, led by BAPETEN Radiation Supervisor Aminuddin Tejo Nugroho and comprising fellow inspectors Mohammad Firdaus Sollachudin, Muhammad Dradjat Kurniawan, and Ardhiantoro Setya Purnomo, conducted the investigation on the flagged container on Wednesday, September 24, 2025.
Meanwhile, the second container was also detected by the RPM while passing through Terminal 3. An inspection was carried out at the Terminal 3 Dangerous Goods Area; MEST findings indicated the presence of Cesium-137 inside the container. Wipe tests revealed no surface contamination. Therefore, BAPETEN recommended that the container be re-exported or returned to its country of origin.
BAPETEN emphasizes that these oversight measures are part of efforts to ensure public and environmental safety against potential exposure to radioactive substances while simultaneously strengthening early detection systems for cargo traffic at the port. [BHKK/SP/GP/Translator: GP]
