Collaborative Strategy with BRIN for Irradiator Facility Dosimetry Audit Training

To fulfill this mandate, DPFRZR is implementing a collaborative strategy with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), an agency that holds authority regarding ionizing radiation safety and the security of radioactive materials, to conduct training on dosimetry audits for irradiator facilities. This training is scheduled to take place from Monday to Friday, September 22–26, 2025.
Adopting a risk-based approach, BAPETEN’s oversight in the industrial and research sectors includes monitoring the use of irradiator facilities, which irradiate materials for purposes such as polymerization, preservation, or sterilization, thereby necessitating guarantees for radiation protection and safety during operations. In assessing license applications for irradiator-related activities, DPFRZR adheres to prevailing laws and regulations concerning nuclear energy.
Recent developments have highlighted radiation dosimetry for food products as a key radiation safety parameter within the scope of irradiator operating licenses, an aspect that had not previously been included in BAPETEN’s safety assessments. Radiation dosimetry for food products encompasses several parameters: the dosimetry system, absorbed dose, dose uniformity ratio, dose distribution, and dose limits. These elements are directly linked to the quality of radiation dosimetry and the reliability of the irradiator facility.
This training is part of the 2025 program for the administration and quality enhancement of licensing for radiation facilities and radioactive materials. Through this initiative, DPFRZR aims to ensure the availability of competent evaluators capable of assessing the various stages of irradiator licensing, including construction, operation, and decommissioning, while guaranteeing safety and security in facility utilization and enhancing the capacity and competence of personnel responsible for irradiator oversight.
