Collaborative Workshop on Patient Radiation Dose Data Reporting: BAPETEN and AFISMI
Kembali 24 September 2025 | Berita BAPETEN | 117 lihatThe Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN), in collaboration with the Indonesian Association of Medical Physicists (Asosiasi Fisikawan Medik Indonesia, or AFISMI), held a collaborative workshop on patient radiation dose data reporting on Wednesday, September 24, 2025. The event served a dual purpose: acting as the kickoff for a series of workshops to be held across various regions and functioning as a "Training of Mentors" (TOM) session to prepare individuals who will later serve as mentors or facilitators for these regional workshops.
The event was conducted in a hybrid format, taking place both at BAPETEN headquarters and online, and was attended by 24 in-person participants and over 80 online participants, all of whom were medical physicists from various healthcare facilities.
The event was opened by BAPETEN’s Deputy Chairman for Nuclear Safety Assessment (PKN), Haendra Subekti. In his opening remarks, he emphasized the importance of consistency in patient radiation dose reporting. Haendra explained that dose reporting is not merely an administrative obligation but a crucial instrument for ensuring patient safety. Furthermore, the Deputy Chairman for PKN highlighted the strategic role of mentors in fostering professionalism and driving the implementation of national policies regarding Diagnostic Reference Levels (DRL) within healthcare facilities.
Following the opening remarks by the Deputy Chairman for PKN, AFISMI Chairman Lukmanda Evan Lubis expressed his appreciation for the collaboration with BAPETEN. Lukmanda noted that Indonesia is currently among the more advanced Southeast Asian nations in implementing Diagnostic Reference Levels (DRL), utilizing an online system, whereas some other countries still rely on manual methods. He stated that this collaboration would strengthen the competence of medical physicists in supporting patient safety and become an integral part of professional competency standards.
The program continued with the first technical session, presented by Ida Bagus Gede Putra Pratama from BAPETEN, covering the introduction and use of the Si-INTAN system for reporting patient doses across various modalities. This session emphasized the importance of the Si-INTAN system in ensuring that dose data is collected in an integrated and consistent manner. Discussions highlighted various challenges, such as discrepancies in dose units across modalities, fluoroscopy reporting issues, and the need for standardization in hybrid modalities like PET-CT and SPECT-CT.
The program continued with a session led by AFISMI representatives Rini Marini and Hanendya Disha Randy Raharja, who discussed dose audits and the use of Typical Patient Dose (TPD), along with the practical complexities of their implementation in healthcare facilities. The speakers explained that dose auditing goes beyond mere reporting; its primary purpose is to optimize radiology services with a focus on patient safety. Furthermore, it was noted that using TPD for dose audits can enhance the quality of radiology services while minimizing the risk of patient radiation exposure. Discussions with participants covered technical difficulties ranging from annual audit report formats and cath lab data reporting to interprofessional communication strategies within healthcare facilities.
Discussions across all sessions stressed the importance of standardized examination names and dose units across various radiology modalities, particularly fluoroscopy, as well as the integration of dose exposure data into digital systems like PACS. Additionally, the involvement of medical equipment vendors was deemed crucial for aligning technical features and ensuring the accuracy of reported dose data.
Following the directive from the Deputy for Nuclear Safety Assessment (PKN), Dedik Eko Sumargo, Head of the Center of Radiation Facilities and Radioactive Sources Regulatory Assessment (P2STPFRZR), concluded the event by proposing the slogan, TPD: Precise, Accurate, Safe. Dedik emphasized that, following this workshop, mentors should take action and serve as agents of change in implementing patient radiation safety across Indonesia.
Driven by a spirit of collaboration, BAPETEN and AFISMI hope that participants will act as catalysts for change in their respective regions, ensuring that patient safety remains the top priority in all radiology services throughout Indonesia.
