The metal smelting and processing industry is a vital industry in supporting development in Indonesia. Apart from supporting domestic metal needs, some industries also supply export needs. One thing that is important in the sustainability of this industry is the availability of industrial raw materials. The raw materials used include metal scrap which can be supplied from within the country or abroad. However, when using metal scrap, an inspection is required to prevent contamination with radioactive substances which could endanger the safety of workers, the public and the environment. For this reason, BAPETEN in collaboration with the Banten Province Department of Industry and Trade held a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) activity, on October 25 2023

The event was opened by the Head of the Center for the Study of Systems and Technology for Monitoring Radiation Facilities and Radioactive Substances (P2STPFRZR) Taruniyati Handayani, in her opening remarks said "BAPETEN is a government agency responsible for monitoring radioactive substances. "BAPETEN is here as the state's role to help ensure that Indonesian products can be accepted at both national and international levels."

“Several cases of radioactive contamination in the metal industry have occurred, both at national and international levels. This could happen to us, of course this would be very detrimental, considering that in the steel industry some of its raw materials come from metal scrap. "The use of metal scrap in the metal industry must ensure that there is no contamination, so that the results of the metal smelting and processing industry can also be ensured to be free from contamination by radioactive radiation." added.

The speech was continued by the Head of the Banten Province Industry and Trade Service, Babar Suharso, who said, "We must prevent rejection of products from Indonesia, because they contain radioactivity, which may come from raw materials. International competition for raw materials, it is possible that raw materials from abroad may contain radiation. "If it has already been imported, not only will our products be rejected because they contain radioactive radiation, but our workers will also be contaminated."

"In Banten there are 432 metal industries, the main thing is how to protect our steel industry, including ensuring that the raw materials do not contain radiation or radioactive substances. Apart from BAPETEN, cooperation with Customs and Excise also needs to be developed. We also need to form a steel cluster to protect the steel industry in Indonesia, so that at our ports we need to install a Radiation Portal Monitor (RPM). This will not add to existing procedures, but will add to existing safety and security.” added.

The event, which was attended by representatives from the Banten Province Department of Industry and Trade, the Metal Smelting and Processing Industry in Banten Province, the Metal Industry Association, was continued with a presentation on "Detection of Radioactive Substances in Preventing Contamination in the Metal Smelting and Processing Industry" by the Coordinator of the Industrial Assessment Function Group and BAPETEN Research Evin Yuliati. In his presentation, he discussed, among other things, supervision of nuclear energy outside of supervisory control (non-utilization), international guidelines, supply and demand for metal scrap, national regulations and the results of metal industry mapping.

The presentation continued on "Detection of Radioactive Substances in Preventing Contamination in the Metal Smelting and Processing Industry" by Environment Engineer PT Krakatau Posco (PTKP) Nadia Samiyah. In his presentation, he discussed, among other things, radioactive detection in the production process, the flow chart for purchasing imported steel scrap and the SOP for radioactive detection in scrap weighing at PTKP.

The event continued with a discussion and question and answer session regarding the potential for radioactive contamination in the metal industry, and the importance of detecting radioactive substances in the scrap raw materials used.

Before the FGD was closed, an action plan was drawn up as material for formulating policy recommendations by BAPETEN as the supervisory body, in collaboration with the Banten Province Department of Industry and Trade in order to ensure radiation safety in sustainable non-Utilization of Nuclear Energy activities.
