BAPETEN and BRIN Hold Bilateral Meeting to Develop National Strategy for Radioactive Waste and Spent Nuclear Fuel Management
Kembali 05 Mei 2025 | Berita BAPETEN | 20 lihatTo prepare the Draft Presidential Regulation (Perpres) on the National Policy and Strategy (Jakstranas) for Radioactive Waste and Spent Nuclear Fuel Management, the Directorate for Regulation of Radiation Facilities and Radioactive Materials (DP2FRZR) of the Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN) held a bilateral meeting with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). The meeting took place at the B.J. Habibie Science and Technology Zone (KST BJ Habibie), Serpong, on May 2, 2025, as an initial step in consolidating the development of a planned, integrated, and sustainable waste management policy.
The meeting was attended by the Director of DP2FRZR BAPETEN, Muhklisin, along with supervisors and activity managers from DP2FRZR. BAPETEN's presence was welcomed by Muhammad Subekti, Director of Nuclear Facilities Management at BRIN, along with his team and representatives from the Inter-Ministerial/Non-Ministerial Committee (PAK) from BRIN.
In his remarks, the director of DP2FRZR BAPETEN emphasized the importance of Jakstranas as a strategic foundation for ensuring the safety and security of long-term radioactive waste management. He also highlighted the need to integrate issues such as the circular economy, industrial waste data management, and support for the planned development of nuclear power plants (NPP or PLTN).
In response, BRIN provided several strategic inputs to strengthen the substance of Jakstranas. These included the need for a philosophical approach to policy formulation, strengthening the research base, developing a long-term roadmap based on waste projections, and a clear separation between policies, strategies, and programs. BRIN also emphasized the importance of clear direction for existing waste management, emergency preparedness, and exploring waste reuse as part of a circular economy approach.
This meeting serves as a crucial opportunity to align perceptions across institutions and build synergy in developing a comprehensive Jakstranas document. It is expected that the resulting policies will not only address current needs but also establish a strategic direction for the safe, sustainable, and public-interest use of nuclear technology.
