BAPETEN Participation in the International Conference on the Safe and Secure Transport of Nuclear and Radioactive Material in Vienna
Kembali 01 April 2026 | Berita BAPETEN | 20 lihatBAPETEN participated in the International Conference on the Safe and Secure Transport of Nuclear and Radioactive Material, organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), held on 23–27 March 2026 at the IAEA Headquarters in Vienna, Austria. The conference was opened by the IAEA Director General, Mariano Grassi, and was attended by representatives from various Member States, international organizations, and stakeholders involved in the transport of nuclear and radioactive materials. This event served as a strategic forum to discuss the strengthening of safety and security aspects in the transport of nuclear materials.
During the conference, several key issues were discussed, including developments in nuclear logistics that are moving toward the transport of fully assembled reactors, as well as the importance of a collaborative approach through the “under the tent” concept, involving a wide range of stakeholders. In addition, it was emphasized that the sustainability of global transport routes is a critical aspect in supporting the peaceful use of nuclear energy amid evolving global geopolitical dynamics.
BAPETEN delegation to this event was led by the Acting Chairman of BAPETEN, Zainal Arifin, along with accompanying officials. During the oral presentation sessions, BAPETEN presented several papers, including:
• Zainal Arifin and Sri Budi Utami: Challenge in the Safe and Secure Transport of Nuclear and Radioactive Material: Facing the Threat of Sabotage
• Grace Esterina: Enhancing the Security and Traceability of Radioactive Material Transport for Well Logging Applications through QR Code and Geo-tagging Integration
• Vatimah Zahrawati: Application of the Regulatory Impact Analysis (RIA) using Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) of the Indonesian Regulation for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Materials
• Nurhadiansyah: Radiation Protection Programme in Transport: A Gap Analysis of Annex XIV of BAPETEN Regulation No. 7/2020 and IAEA SSG-86
In addition, Hermawan Puji Yuwana participated in the poster session by presenting a scientific paper entitled An Analysis of Challenges in the Land Transportation of Tin Slag 2. The Indonesian delegation also actively took part in various panel discussions addressing the safe transport of nuclear materials, including for Floating Nuclear Power Plants (FNPP), Small Modular Reactors (SMR), and microreactors, as well as the utilization of technologies such as drones and the strengthening of regional cooperation. The discussions also covered challenges in both national and international transport, including cross-border shipments.
On the final day of the event, BAPETEN participated in a technical visit to the IAEA Nuclear Security Training and Demonstration Centre (NSTDC) at the Seibersdorf Laboratories. This activity provided practical insights into nuclear security systems.
Through this participation, BAPETEN is expected to further strengthen its regulatory oversight functions and enhance the implementation of safety and security standards in the transport of nuclear and radioactive materials in Indonesia, in line with international requirements.
