BAPETEN received a courtesy visit from a delegation of the British Embassy in Indonesia, along with representatives from Mott MacDonald, a UK-based consulting firm specializing in engineering and infrastructure, including the nuclear energy sector. The delegation was led by Ming Tan, Global Practice Leader for Nuclear at Mott MacDonald, and accompanied by Andria Yusuf, Senior Trade Advisor for Energy from the British Embassy in Indonesia. The meeting took place in the main meeting room, Building A of BAPETEN, on Thursday (5/3).

Acting Chairman of BAPETEN, Zainal Arifin, delivered an overview of BAPETEN roles and functions as the sole nuclear regulatory authority in Indonesia. The meeting also served as an opportunity for an open discussion on the development of nuclear energy programs in Indonesia, particularly in the context of the planned construction of Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs), as well as to gain insights from Mott MacDonald’s experience in engaging with regulators worldwide across various NPP projects in several countries.

On that occasion, Ming Tan shared Mott MacDonald’s experience in its involvement in the development of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant project in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), as one of the successful examples of an embarking country in developing its nuclear energy program. Furthermore, BAPETEN expressed its interest in gaining deeper insights into Mott MacDonald’s experience and role in supporting nuclear power plant (NPP) licensing processes in various countries. Ming Tan explained that each country has its own characteristics and regulatory approaches in the licensing and oversight of NPPs. In this context, Mott MacDonald can serve as a Technical Support Organization (TSO), providing technical assistance to regulatory bodies across various stages of the licensing process and safety assessment.
