The Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN), in collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), organized the Regional Workshop on Policy and Strategies for Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) Management in Jakarta on September 22, 2025. The event, which runs until September 26, 2026, is attended by 27 participants from 17 IAEA member states.

The event began with a report from Ahmad Ciptadi Syuryavin, Head of BAPETEN’s Education and Training Division (BDL), who noted that the center is responsible for human resource competency development, particularly regarding nuclear safety and security. He expressed his gratitude for the trust placed in them to host this event.

"We are committed to organizing training at national, regional, and international levels, and we hope this five-day training will prove beneficial to the participants," he added.

Subsequently, IAEA representative Horst Richard Sebastian Monken Fernandes expressed his appreciation to BAPETEN for organizing the event. "This is an opportunity to develop ideas and strategies regarding NORM management; I hope this helps participants formulate ideas and solutions that can be elevated to the level of policymakers," he said.

Haendra Subekti, BAPETEN’s Deputy Chairman for Nuclear Safety Assessment, who opened the event, stated that NORM management requires coordination across various stakeholders. He noted that one of the event's objectives is to formulate policies addressing these challenges.

"Indonesia faces challenges in NORM management due to extensive mining activities, particularly involving minerals. I thank the experts and participants attending this event; I hope for active collaboration among participants and the generation of useful future outcomes," he concluded while officially opening the event.

The program continued with presentations titled "NORM Management in Indonesia: Challenges and Approaches" by Radiation Supervisor Vatimah Zahrawati; "Reviewing Fundamental Concepts about NORM" by Horst Richard Sebastian Monken Fernandes; and "Overview of IAEA Safety Standards: Focus on NORM" by Marta García Talavera San Miguel from Spain's Nuclear Safety Council (Consejo de Seguridad Nuclear).

It is expected that this activity will assist member states in formulating policies and management strategies for NORM in their respective countries, in accordance with international standards. [BHKK/Da/Translator: GP]
