Kembali 29 September 2025 | Berita BAPETEN | 18 lihatThe Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN) held a regional workshop on safety and nuclear security culture values and approaches in Yogyakarta from September 29 to October 3, 2025, with 23 participants from 13 countries, including Bangladesh, Brunei Darussalam, the Maldives, the Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, Fiji, Timor Leste, and others. This activity was part of the Regulatory Infrastructure Development Project (RIDP), which aims to assist participating countries in establishing or developing effective and sustainable regulatory infrastructure for radiation safety and radioactive material security.
In attendance was Bouchra Boustani, Co-Scientific Secretary of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and the workshop invited several experts, including Monica Haage, Kathleen Heppel-Masys, and Agustinus Bayu Purnomo. In her opening remarks, Boustani stated that the participants' participation reflected a strong commitment to improving the culture of radioactive material safety and security at the regional level and in accordance with the standards and best practices of each country. Later in his remarks, Haendra Subekti, Deputy Chairman for Nuclear Safety and Assessment at the BAPETEN, emphasized the importance of a balanced culture of safety and security, as the two impact each other. Furthermore, the principles of the regulatory framework will also be connected to the socio-cultural conditions in each country.
Following the opening remarks, the first day's events included a sociogram, an introduction to the basics of radiation safety, an introduction to the basics of nuclear security, the interaction between human, technical, and organizational factors, and the interfaces between safety and security. It is expected that these activities will enhance participants' understanding of the IAEA's published guidelines for nuclear safety and security culture, including their implementation and self-assessment methodology.
